A PDF form keeps its fields as editable objects even after someone has filled them in, so the next person who opens the file can change the answers. Flattening draws each field’s current value straight onto the page and removes the interactive field, so the text, checkboxes and selections become fixed page content. The document looks exactly the same, but the form can no longer be edited or re-filled. Everything happens in your browser with pdf-lib, and your original file is never modified.

How flattening works

What gets flattened

This tool flattens the interactive form fields (the AcroForm) of a PDF. Each field is rendered with the value it currently holds and then removed as an editable object.

What this tool does not change

  • Comments and annotations. Sticky notes, highlights and markup are left as they are; they are not flattened or removed.
  • Optional-content layers. OCG layers are kept, not collapsed.
  • The rest of the page. Existing text, images and vector graphics are untouched, and the file is not turned into an image.

If a PDF has no form fields, there is nothing to flatten and the file comes back unchanged.

When to flatten

  • Final form version. After a form is filled in, flatten it so no one can alter the answers.
  • Submitting official forms. Some portals expect a flattened form rather than a live one.
  • Share-ready documents. Prevents accidental edits to the fields by the recipient.
  • Wider compatibility. Flat forms render the same across old and simple PDF viewers.
  • Pre-flight before printing. Avoids printer-driver quirks with interactive fields.

When not to flatten

  • Template PDFs. If you want to reuse the blank form, keep the fields editable.
  • Forms that still need input. Once flattened, no one can type into the fields again.

Flatten vs protect

  • Flatten makes the form fields visual only; recipients can still copy text, print and extract images.
  • Protect (password + permissions) restricts what can be done with the PDF but does not change its content.

Use both for the strongest result: flatten to lock the answers, then password-protect and restrict permissions.

After flattening

  • File size may change slightly. The drawn field text is added to the page content stream.
  • Text stays searchable. Flattened field text remains real text, not an image.
  • The change is permanent. There is no interactive form left to edit afterwards.
