Moon Sign Calculator

Moon sign

Your sun sign is the one most people know — it depends only on the month you were born. Your moon sign is different: it depends on the exact date, and ideally the time, because the Moon moves through a full zodiac circle every 27.3 days and switches signs every 2.2 days on average. This calculator uses the tropical zodiac (the default in Western astrology) and tracks the lunar cycle from a reference position to estimate which of the twelve signs the Moon was in on your birth date.

How to find your moon sign

  1. 1

    Enter your birth date

The day, month and year are enough for an approximate result. Birth time would refine it to the hour.

  2. 2

We compute the lunar cycle position

The sidereal month is 27.321661 days. We count cycles from a known reference date (6 January 2000) and find the fractional position.

  3. 3

That fraction maps to a sign

The zodiac is divided into 12 arcs of 30°. Your lunar fraction × 360° lands in one of them — Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so on.

  4. 4

    Read the result

The calculator returns the sign name, its glyph, its element (Fire, Earth, Air, Water) and the approximate angle.

What moon signs mean in a natal chart

In Western astrology the sun sign represents the core identity, while the moon sign is associated with the inner emotional world — instincts, reactions, what feels like home. The moon stays in each sign for roughly two and a half days, so it is the fastest-moving point in a natal chart after the Ascendant.

The twelve moon signs at a glance

Sign Glyph Element Keywords (Western interpretation)
Aries Fire Quick reactions, impulse, emotional heat
Taurus Earth Comfort, stability, sensory grounding
Gemini Air Curiosity, talkativeness, need for variety
Cancer Water Nurturing, moody, deeply domestic
Leo Fire Dramatic, generous, needs recognition
Virgo Earth Analytical, service-oriented, anxious
Libra Air Harmony-seeking, indecisive, aesthetic
Scorpio Water Intense, private, transformational
Sagittarius Fire Restless, philosophical, optimistic
Capricorn Earth Disciplined, emotionally guarded
Aquarius Air Detached, inventive, community-oriented
Pisces Water Dreamy, empathic, boundary-soft

Why the result may differ from a full natal chart

A precise moon sign needs three inputs: date, time and location. Without a birth time, the calculator assumes local noon UTC, which is close enough for a dominant sign reading. If the Moon changed signs on your birthday, you could land in either of two neighbours — a professional ephemeris using hour and minute resolves the ambiguity.

Tropical versus sidereal zodiac

This calculator uses the tropical zodiac, which anchors 0° Aries to the spring equinox and is the default in Western astrology. Vedic (Jyotish) astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is offset by roughly 24° today thanks to precession of the equinoxes. If you got a different moon sign from a Vedic chart, that is why.

Frequently Asked Questions

In Western astrology the sun sign describes the conscious self while the moon sign describes the emotional inner life. Two Libra suns can feel very different if one has a Cancer moon (protective, homebound) and the other has a Sagittarius moon (restless, wandering).

Good enough to identify your moon sign on most days. Because the Moon changes sign every 2.2 days on average, roughly 1 in 12 birth dates fall on a sign boundary. If you are on a boundary you would need the hour of birth to be certain.

The lunar cycle math is astronomy — the Moon genuinely was at a particular ecliptic longitude on your birth date. The interpretation of that position as a personality trait is astrology, which is a belief system rather than a scientific claim.

The zodiac runs Aries (0°–30°), Taurus (30°–60°) and so on through Pisces (330°–360°). Sagittarius sits at 240°–270° and Capricorn at 270°–300°, so the calculator matches that ordering.

No. The date you enter is used once to compute the lunar position and is not stored or shared.
