Word Cloud Generator

A word cloud shows what a text is about at a glance: the more often a word appears, the larger it is drawn. Paste a paragraph, an article or a batch of survey answers, choose one of five shapes and a colour theme, and this generator packs the most frequent words into a canvas you can download as a PNG. Everything runs in your browser, so the text you paste is never uploaded.

How to make a word cloud

  1. 1

    Paste your text

Anything from a single paragraph to a whole document. The more text you give it, the richer the cloud.

  2. 2

    Choose a shape

Pack the words into a circle, square, diamond, triangle or star.

  3. 3

    Pick a colour theme

Blue, warm, green or mono. Each word takes a colour from the theme palette.

  4. 4

    Generate and download

Press Generate to redraw the cloud, then Download PNG to save the image.

How the words are chosen

Everything happens in your browser:

  1. The text is converted to lowercase.
  2. It is split into words on spaces and punctuation.
  3. Words of two characters or fewer are dropped, along with a built-in list of common English stopwords (the, and, for, with, and so on).
  4. The remaining words are counted and the 80 most frequent are drawn.
  5. Word size is set by how often each word appears, relative to the most common one.

What you can customise

Setting Options Notes
Shape Circle, Square, Diamond, Triangle, Star The outline the words are packed into
Colour theme Blue, Warm, Green, Mono Each word takes a colour from the palette
Export PNG Saves a 1000 x 640 pixel image

The font is the system sans-serif and cannot be changed, and the export is a PNG bitmap: there is no SVG export.

Languages without spaces

Because words are split on spaces and punctuation, languages written without spaces between words, such as Chinese, Japanese and Thai, are not broken into separate words: a run of that text is treated as one long token. To build a cloud from that kind of text, put spaces between the words you want counted first. The stopword list is English only, so common words in other languages are counted normally.

Design tips for a readable cloud

  • Keep it to 50-100 words. More becomes visual noise, which is why this tool already caps the cloud at 80.
  • A restrained palette reads cleaner than many bright colours competing for attention.
  • Short, focused text produces a clearer cloud than a long, repetitive one.

When a word cloud is the wrong choice

  • For exact numbers, a bar chart of the top words is clearer and easier to compare between texts.
  • For technical writing, code keywords and jargon do not cluster well.
  • A cloud shows frequency, not meaning: a big “problem” does not mean problems are good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Size is based on frequency: the most common word is the largest, and the rest are scaled down relative to it. The 80 most frequent words are shown and the rest are left out to keep the cloud readable.

Not currently. The cloud is drawn on a canvas and downloads as a PNG image, 1000 x 640 pixels, which you can drop straight into a slide deck or document.

Words of two characters or fewer, plus a built-in list of common English words such as “the”, “and” and “with”. There is no custom stopword box and no stemming, so different forms of a word (run, runs, running) are counted separately.

Only partially. The tool splits words on spaces and punctuation, so text written without spaces is treated as one block. Put spaces between the terms you want to count and the cloud will render them correctly.

No. The word cloud is generated entirely in your browser and the text is never sent to a server or saved.
