Spelling Bee Generator
The built-in English word list is shuffled in this browser. Funnel mode keeps only the selected level and shuffled order in this tab's temporary session storage for up to 30 minutes; nothing reaches our servers or the URL.

Spelling words
Build a practice word list for a classroom spelling bee or a solo study session. Pick a level, from Grade 1 up to Grade 5 or a harder Bee round, and the generator shows a shuffled list of 16 English words for that level. Press Shuffle to reorder the list for another practice round. The word lists are built in and in English only.
How the list is built
-
1
Pick a level
Six levels: Grade 1 to Grade 5, plus a harder Bee round with contest-style words.
-
2
Read the 16 words
Each level has a fixed set of 16 English words, shown numbered in a grid.
-
3
Shuffle for a new order
Press Shuffle to reorder the same list so the sequence is fresh each round.
-
4
Practice out loud
A helper reads a word aloud and the speller writes or says the spelling.
Word levels
| Level | Example words from the list |
|---|---|
| Grade 1 | cat, dog, sun, hat, pig |
| Grade 2 | apple, happy, water, smile, juice |
| Grade 3 | animal, garden, rocket, school, orange |
| Grade 4 | important, language, mountain, sentence, question |
| Grade 5 | beautifully, environment, necessary, knowledge, opportunity |
| Bee | conscientious, fluorescent, perseverance, surveillance, quintessential |
Each level holds 16 words. The list is the same each time for a level; Shuffle only changes the order, so a speller cannot memorise a fixed sequence.
How a spelling bee round works
- Pronunciation. The word is read aloud clearly.
- The speller may ask for the word to be repeated.
- Spelling. The speller says the letters one by one.
- A sentence using the word can help tell homophones apart (
principalvsprinciple). - Confirmation. The word is spelled correctly or the speller is out.
Because this tool only supplies the word list, a helper still reads the words aloud and confirms each spelling.
Study strategies
- Roots, prefixes, suffixes. Learning common parts covers a large share of longer words.
- Silent letters.
-mb(thumb),kn-(knight),ghin through, learn these in clusters. - Look-alike traps. Vowel pairs such as
ai,ei,ieeach follow a short rule with a few exceptions. - Little and often. Short daily rounds beat one long session before a test.
Good to know
- The words are in English only. The built-in lists will not produce words in other languages.
- There is no definition, audio or printable export in this tool; it generates the word list, and a helper reads it aloud.
