Restyle modern English with a playful archaizing effect. This is a deterministic substitution tool, not a translation into authentic Early Modern English and not a generator of Shakespeare quotations. Its output remains English.

Exact scope

The tool first replaces 15 fixed phrases such as you are → thou art, then uses small word lists for pronouns, helper verbs, common archaic terms and 18 selected -eth verbs. Classic adds the broader word lists; Dramatic also adds a limited dramatic vocabulary, prefixes Hark! when needed and appends Forsooth. It uses simple neighbouring-word checks for thou/thee and thy/thine, not grammatical parsing.

Matching is case-insensitive and replacement case follows the matched word or phrase. Unmatched text and punctuation remain in place. Line breaks are retained only when that option is enabled; Dramatic may add punctuation. Input is limited to 4000 characters. Text is sent to the server and, in funnel mode, encoded into navigation URLs, so do not enter confidential material.

Shakespeare’s real language uses syntax, meter, wordplay and meanings that require editorial context. The Folger guide to reading Shakespeare’s language describes unusual structures, compression and historical changes in meaning. Use the Folger Shakespeare editions for reliable texts; this tool neither consults nor reproduces that corpus.
