Estimate sand for a sandbox, paver bed, masonry job or general fill without treating every product as the same material. Choose a rectangle, circle, triangle or known area, then enter the finished depth in imperial or metric units. The calculator keeps the underlying calculation in SI units and reports finished volume, loose purchase volume, weight, whole bags and one optional cost estimate. Purpose and density are separate: selecting “play sand” describes the job, while moisture and packing determine the planning weight.

Measure the finished space
Choose its shape and enter dimensions plus finished depth. Use known area for an irregular space you measured separately.

Choose the purpose and a dry, damp, wet or supplier-provided bulk density. Purpose does not silently change density.

Sand volume formula
First calculate area, then multiply by the required finished depth:
- Rectangle:
area = length × width - Circle:
area = π × (diameter ÷ 2)² - Triangle:
area = base × height ÷ 2 - Finished volume:
area × depth
If loose delivered sand is expected to reduce in volume when placed, the calculator converts finished volume to a pre-waste loose volume. Waste is added after that:

The separate stages make the assumptions visible. For loose sandbox fill, keep compaction at zero unless you intentionally plan to settle or compact it. Engineered fill and paver work should follow the project specification or a supplier recommendation. FHWA guidance treats moisture-density behavior as a measured material property; there is no responsible universal compaction percentage for every sand.
Density and weight are estimates
Weight is purchase volume × bulk density. The dry-loose planning preset is 1,600 kg/m³. Damp and wet presets are heavier, but real weight changes with grading, void space, moisture and how the load was handled. A product name does not prove its density. Use the supplier’s tested bulk density when payload, structural loading or a tight purchase quantity matters.
The tool shows both metric tonnes (1,000 kg) and US short tons (2,000 lb). They are not interchangeable: one metric tonne is about 1.1023 US short tons. Supplier quotes must be matched to the correct unit.
Bags and price bases
Sand bags may be labelled by weight or nominal volume. Enter exactly what is printed on the package. The calculator divides estimated weight by a weight-labelled bag, or purchase volume by a volume-labelled bag, and rounds up to a whole package. It never guesses cubic volume from a 25 kg or 50 lb label. Quikrete, for example, currently sells all-purpose sand in multiple weight bags, while its paver-sand planning uses 0.5 ft³ packages.
Choose one cost basis: per bag, cubic metre, cubic yard, metric tonne or US short ton. The estimate uses only that basis and does not add competing bulk and bag prices together. Delivery, pallet deposits, taxes and labour are outside the result.
Sand and silica safety
Read the product label and Safety Data Sheet before handling sand. Sand can contain crystalline silica. OSHA explains that respirable silica is created by dusty work such as cutting, grinding or crushing silica-containing material, and requires workplace exposure controls for covered construction tasks. NIOSH recommends appropriate dust controls such as wet methods and local exhaust for dust-producing work. Do not treat a quantity result as safety guidance, and do not use play-sand marketing as a substitute for the specific product’s SDS or local workplace rules.

Frequently Asked Questions
Use the supplier’s measured bulk density when possible. The presets are planning values for dry loose, damp and wet conditions; grading, voids, moisture and packing can move the real value substantially.
Use zero for a loose finished fill unless the job requires compaction or expected settlement. For a paver bed or engineered fill, use the project or supplier value rather than a universal percentage.
Choose whether the package is labelled by weight or volume, enter that label size, and the tool divides the matching total by the package size. Any partial package is rounded up.
