Why size matters more than breed
Larger dogs age faster than small dogs. A 7-year-old Chihuahua is middle-aged; a 7-year-old Great Dane is already senior. The leading theory is that rapid growth in large breeds accelerates cellular aging. Size is a better predictor than breed because mixed-breed dogs in the same weight class follow the same curve.

The epigenetic formula
The 2019 UC San Diego study proposed:
human_age = 16 * ln(dog_age) + 31
That formula matches the DNA methylation ages of Labrador Retrievers closely but understates puppy years and does not cover size differences. The size-adjusted tables above derive from veterinary life-stage guidelines (AAHA 2019) and empirical lifespan data per breed.
Life stages and what they mean
- Puppy (0-1 year). Rapid growth, vaccinations, socialization.
- Young adult (1-3 years). Full size, high energy; focus on training and exercise.
- Adult (3-6 or 7 years). Stable baseline; annual vet visits, dental care.
- Mature (6-9 years depending on size). Gradual slowing; watch weight and joint health.
- Senior (8+ or earlier for giants). Twice-yearly vet visits, blood panels, joint supplements.
- Geriatric. Comfort-focused care, pain management, shorter walks.
Signs to watch as the dog ages
- Cloudier eyes (nuclear sclerosis is normal; cataracts are not).
- Slower on stairs or reluctance to jump onto furniture.
- Weight gain on a previously stable diet.
- Behavioral changes: confusion, altered sleep patterns.
- Lumps or bumps; most are benign but all deserve a vet look.

The 7x rule came from dividing average human lifespan by average dog lifespan in the 1950s. It produces sensible numbers in the middle of some dogs’ lives but dramatically underestimates a 1-year-old puppy (who is roughly a 15-year-old in development, not a 7-year-old) and misses how senior aging changes by size.
Size dominates, but specific breeds have known longevity quirks. Golden Retrievers are prone to cancer that shortens average lifespan; Dachshunds often live longer than their size group suggests. Use the size table as a baseline and adjust based on your breed’s typical lifespan.
