Visual redaction is not secure redaction

The most important caveat: a black bar drawn over text in an image or PDF hides the text visually but often leaves the original characters in the file. Real redaction removes the underlying text. Use this generator for design and fiction, not for publishing documents that contain actual secrets.

How real government documents are redacted

FOIA-released documents use software that deletes the text and replaces it with a black bitmap. The exemption code (b)(1), (b)(5), (b)(6) is usually printed next to the bar to cite the statute used. If you are faking the look, drop the (b)(X) footnote in as a detail, it sells the effect.

Common mistakes when using redacted text in design

  • Uniform word lengths. A paragraph where every redacted word is exactly 8 characters looks artificial. Vary the block length to match the original words.
  • No punctuation. Leave commas, periods and question marks visible, they give the sentence its rhythm.
  • Overused effect. A whole page of black bars reads as noise. One or two phrases per paragraph is more dramatic.

No. This tool generates visual fake-redaction for design and fiction. For legally valid redaction, use PDF software that removes the underlying text (Adobe Acrobat’s Redact tool, PDF-XChange, or pdftk + qpdf scripting).

Your text is sent to our server to render the masked preview, and it is not stored or logged: it is discarded once the page responds. Even so, this is cosmetic fake redaction, so never paste genuine secrets expecting them to be protected.

Full-block and shade characters are rendered by the active font. Monospaced fonts show consistent widths; proportional fonts compress narrow block glyphs. Stick to a monospaced or display font for consistent output.

No: the tool masks the whole passage evenly with the glyph you choose, with no per-word selection. If you only want part of a sentence hidden, mask that fragment on its own and paste it back beside the text you want to keep readable.
