What makes a good conversation question
The questions here are in English. The ones that land in any language usually share a few traits:
- Concrete beats abstract: “the best meal you have had this year” beats “describe a great meal”.
- Open beats yes/no: skip “do you like jazz”; prefer “what piece of music has felt different on a second listen”.
- A specific time frame: “this year”, “when you were twelve”, “last week” gives the answerer an anchor.
Ways to use the questions
- Team meetings: one light question per standup keeps things human without eating the hour.
- Dinners and parties: pull three or four and let guests skip any without explanation.
- Road trips: a longer list keeps a car conversation going for miles.
- Journaling: show one, write for five minutes, do not edit.
Example questions
- “What’s your dream job?”
- “If you could have any superpower, what would it be?”
- “What’s the best advice you’ve received?”
- “What food could you never give up?”
