Present value discounts one future lump sum back to today using a nominal annual rate and annual, semiannual, quarterly or monthly compounding. Enter the amount, rate and term in years; the result uses the same currency or unit as the amount you enter. This is not an annuity, bond-pricing or net-present-value calculator, and it does not model fees, taxes, inflation or changing rates.

The formula

PV = FV / (1 + r)^n

Where:

  • FV is the future value (the sum to be received later)
  • r is the discount rate per compounding period (annual rate ÷ periods per year)
  • n is the total number of compounding periods (years × periods per year)

The total discount is simply FV − PV, the slice of the future amount that vanishes once you account for the time value of money.

Worked example

Suppose the future amount is 10,000 units in 10 years and the discount rate is 5%, compounded annually. Then n = 10, r = 0.05, and:

PV = 10,000 / (1.05)^10 = 10,000 / 1.6289 = 6,139.13

So the future 10,000 is worth about 6,139.13 today in the same unit, and the total discount is about 3,860.87. Compounding more often pushes the present value slightly lower because the effective annual rate rises.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Mismatched periods. The rate and the number of periods must use the same unit. If you compound monthly, divide the annual rate by 12 and multiply the years by 12, this tool does that for you.
  • Confusing present value with net present value. This calculator discounts one future sum. To discount a whole series of cash flows, use a net present value (NPV) calculator instead.
  • Ignoring the discount rate’s source. Use your real opportunity cost, the return you could safely earn elsewhere, not an arbitrary number, or the result will mislead.
  • Assuming a currency. The calculator does not convert money. If you enter euros, every amount is in euros; if you enter yen, every amount is in yen.

Present value discounts a single future amount back to today. Net present value (NPV) discounts a whole stream of cash flows over several periods and subtracts the initial investment. Use this tool for one lump sum and an NPV calculator for a series.

More frequent compounding raises the effective annual rate, which discounts the future sum a little more heavily, so the present value drops slightly. Switching from annual to monthly compounding at the same nominal rate gives a marginally lower present value.

Use your opportunity cost of capital, the return you could earn on a comparable, equally risky alternative. For safe decisions that might be a savings or bond yield; for riskier ones, add a premium. A higher rate means a lower present value.
