PPM Calculator
This calculator treats milligrams per liter as an approximation of mass-based parts per million for a dilute water-based solution whose density is close to 1 kg/L. Enter solute mass in milligrams and total solution volume in liters to obtain mg/L ≈ ppm, plus the corresponding ppb and percent. It is not a general ppm converter for gases, concentrated liquids or mixtures with a substantially different density.
How to calculate ppm
-
1
Enter the solute mass
The amount of dissolved substance, in milligrams (mg).
-
2
Enter the solution volume
The total volume of the solution, in liters (L).
-
3
Read the concentration
The result shows ppm (mg/L), ppb and percent, recalculated instantly.
The ppm formula
For a dilute aqueous (water-based) solution, parts per million is simply mass over volume:
approximate ppm = solute mass (mg) ÷ solution volume (L)
This shortcut uses the approximation that 1 L of dilute aqueous solution has a mass of about 1 kg, or 1,000,000 mg. True ppm is a ratio of like quantities (usually mass/mass or volume/volume), while mg/L is mass/volume; they are numerically close here because of the assumed density.
1 ppm = 1 mg/L = 1000 ppb1 ppm = 0.0001 % = 1 µg/gpercent (%) = ppm ÷ 10,000
Worked example
Suppose you dissolve 5 mg of fluoride in 2 L of water:
- ppm = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 ppm
- ppb = 2.5 × 1000 = 2,500 ppb
- percent = 2.5 ÷ 10,000 = 0.00025 %
This arithmetic does not determine whether that concentration is safe. Health or process limits depend on the substance, exposure route, jurisdiction and application.
Quick reference
| Concentration | Equals | Equals | Equals |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 % | 10,000 ppm | 10,000,000 ppb | 10 g/L |
| 0.1 % | 1,000 ppm | 1,000,000 ppb | 1 g/L |
| 1 ppm | 0.0001 % | 1,000 ppb | 1 mg/L |
| 1 ppb | 0.0000001 % | 0.001 ppm | 1 µg/L |
Common pitfalls
- Volume in milliliters, not liters. A 250 mL beaker is 0.25 L. Convert before entering, or your ppm will be off by 1000×.
- Non-aqueous or concentrated solutions. The mg/L = ppm shortcut assumes density ≈ 1 g/mL. For brines, solvents or syrups, use mass/mass ppm (mg of solute per kg of solution) instead.
- Confusing ppm and percent. They differ by a factor of 10,000, a 0.5 % solution is 5,000 ppm, not 0.5 ppm.
- Mixing mg and g. Solute mass here is in milligrams. If your label lists grams, multiply by 1000 first.
Frequently Asked Questions
ppm means one part per million like parts. mg/L is mass per volume, so it is not universally the same unit. For dilute water-based solutions with density close to 1 kg/L, 1 mg/L is approximately 1 ppm by mass.
Divide ppm by 10,000. For example, 2,500 ppm = 2,500 ÷ 10,000 = 0.25 %. To go the other way, multiply percent by 10,000: 0.5 % = 5,000 ppm.
The mg/L = ppm shortcut assumes a density close to 1 g/mL, which holds for dilute aqueous solutions. For concentrated mixtures, brines or non-aqueous solvents, use a mass/mass basis (mg of solute per kg of solution) and adjust for the actual density.
The standard calculator is server-backed, so entered values are sent to the server to update the result. Funnel mode also places the numbers in the page URL. Do not enter sensitive data; the tool only needs non-sensitive measurements.
