Paragraph Counter
Paste any text, an essay draft, a blog post, a report, and the counter splits it on paragraph breaks, sentence boundaries and word tokens to give you three numbers at once: paragraphs, sentences and words, plus the averages (words per paragraph, sentences per paragraph). Useful for staying inside essay structure limits and diagnosing wall-of-text drafts before publication.
How paragraphs are counted
-
1
Paste the text
Any length. Empty lines are what separate paragraphs.
-
2
Paragraph detection
Blank lines (two consecutive newlines) mark paragraph breaks.
-
3
Sentence splitting
Terminators like period, question mark and exclamation: with abbreviation handling.
-
4
Word tokenisation
Whitespace-separated runs, with contractions counted as single words.
-
5
Read all counts
Paragraphs, sentences, words, plus averages per paragraph.
Healthy paragraph metrics
| Metric | Target | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Words per paragraph | 40-100 | Long enough to develop, short enough to scan |
| Sentences per paragraph | 3-6 | Beyond that, readers lose the thread |
| Paragraphs per 500 words | 6-10 | Average blog density |
| Paragraphs per page (print) | 3-5 | With normal line-spacing |
Web writing skews shorter than print. Mobile readers especially benefit from 2-3 sentence paragraphs, dense blocks get skipped.
Structure checks this enables
- Essay word count. Undergraduate essays are usually 1,500-3,000 words split into 6-12 paragraphs. This counter verifies both.
- Blog post length. Commercial content sits 1,200-2,000 words. Breaking it into 20-30 paragraphs keeps scannability high.
- Academic abstract. Usually 150-300 words in a single paragraph. Use the counter to trim.
- Newsletter discipline. Good newsletters use very short paragraphs, 1-2 sentences, to feel like a personal note.
Common structural problems
- Wall of text. One paragraph over 200 words is a readability red flag on screen. Break at every natural pause.
- Single-sentence paragraphs everywhere. Works sparingly for emphasis. Every paragraph as one sentence feels like bullet points with extra steps.
- Uneven density. Three 50-word paragraphs followed by one 400-word paragraph signals thinking changed tempo. Rewrite for consistency.
- Giant opening. A 300-word intro paragraph buries the hook. Aim for 40-80 words in the first paragraph, with the core idea in the first or second sentence.
Counting edge cases
- Dialogue. Each speaker turn starts a new paragraph in fiction, regardless of length. A novel with active dialogue has many short paragraphs.
- Quotes and pull-outs. Block quotes count as their own paragraph.
- Lists. Bulleted lists are usually not counted as paragraphs, this tool offers both behaviours.
- Headings. Section headings are not paragraphs; the counter excludes markdown-style headings when parsing.
Frequently Asked Questions
A block of text separated from others by a blank line (two consecutive newlines). In plain text or markdown, that’s the standard. In HTML, any <p> or equivalent block-level container.
Yes, headings and list items are treated according to markdown conventions. Headings (# ## ###) do not count as paragraphs; list items can be counted as paragraphs or excluded depending on the setting.
Sentence splitting is trickier than it looks. Abbreviations like “Dr.”, “Mr.”, “e.g.” fool naive splitters; the tool includes a list of common abbreviations to avoid false splits, but quirky styles can still produce a small margin of error.
Most assignment briefs specify a word count (±10%). Keep paragraphs in the 80-150 word range with 4-7 sentences each, and aim for 6-10 paragraphs per 1,500-word essay. Use the averages to spot uneven structure.
