Check whether your browser receives a microphone signal before a call. This tester shows a live waveform and an uncalibrated RMS estimate in dBFS, lets you choose an available input, and can record up to 10 seconds for local playback. It can reveal silence, a quiet signal or a very high digital level, but it is not a calibrated sound meter and cannot guarantee how another app will sound.

How to test a microphone

What the meter measures

The display estimates short-window root mean square (RMS) amplitude from the audio frames supplied by your browser and expresses it relative to digital full scale (dBFS). It is not a calibrated sound-pressure measurement. Your operating system, audio driver or browser may still apply gain or processing even when the page requests processing to be disabled.

These bands help diagnose obvious silence or level extremes. They are not a universal microphone-quality target, and a peak-sample meter in another app can show different numbers from this RMS estimate.

Common microphone problems

  • No usable signal. Check the hardware mute, operating-system input, browser permission and selected device.
  • Very high level or audible distortion. Reduce input gain where available, move away from the microphone, then listen to another sample.
  • Plosive sounds. Try moving the microphone slightly off-axis or using a pop filter.
  • Quiet or intermittent sound. Test another port or cable, confirm the selected input, and compare with the operating system’s own meter before blaming the microphone.
  • Echo. Lower speaker volume or use headphones if the microphone is picking up speaker output.

Tips for a useful call check

  • Test at the distance and speaking volume you expect to use.
  • Listen with headphones when judging the recorded sample, so playback does not feed back into the microphone.
  • Compare the result with the actual meeting or recording app. That app may use different gain, echo cancellation, noise suppression and compression.
  • A Bluetooth headset can switch to a lower-bandwidth call profile when its microphone is active. The exact behavior depends on the headset, operating system and app.
  • If a device does not appear, confirm that the operating system sees it, reconnect it if appropriate, and reload the device list.
