What this calculator measures
Grout fills a three-dimensional joint, so its geometric volume depends on joint length × width × depth. This calculator keeps that physical volume separate from product mass. That distinction matters: cementitious, epoxy and ready-to-use grouts do not share one universal density, and even two products of the same broad type can publish different coverage.
The three calculation modes serve different layouts:

The regular-area result is a centreline estimate for a repeating rectangular pattern. The rows-and-columns mode deliberately excludes perimeter sealant or edge gaps: a 4 × 5 grid has joints between its tiles, not an assumed grout band around the outside.
The geometric formulas
For a measured run, where J is total joint length:
grout volume = J × joint width × joint depth
When length is in metres and width and depth are in millimetres:
litres = length (m) × width (mm) × depth (mm) ÷ 1,000
For regular-area mode, with area A, tile length L and tile width W all converted to metres:
J = A × (1 ÷ L + 1 ÷ W)
For an exact grid with R rows, C columns, tile length L, tile width W and joint width G, first calculate the full tiled field:
field width = C × L + (C − 1) × G
field height = R × W + (R − 1) × G
Then subtract the combined tile-face area and apply the joint depth:
joint volume = (field width × field height − R × C × L × W) × joint depth
This exact-grid formula counts the full void between tiles, including each crossing once, and does not add a perimeter. The regular-area mode remains a manufacturer-style repeating-layout estimate rather than an exact grid takeoff. Tile-edge shape, variable depth and site conditions still matter; use the exact product’s coverage data for purchasing.
After geometric volume is found:
volume with allowance = geometric volume × (1 + allowance ÷ 100)
If the manufacturer publishes usable volume per package:
packages = round up(volume with allowance ÷ usable litres per package)
If it publishes a product-specific mixed density and the total usable mixed mass instead:
usable litres per package = total mixed usable mass (kg) ÷ mixed density (kg/L)
Do not enter the dry powder bag weight in this equation: prescribed water, liquid resin, hardener or other components change the mixed mass. Use this mode only when the exact product documentation supports both inputs. Do not copy a density from another brand or grout family. MAPEI’s own grout calculator says its consumption calculation uses the selected product’s density, while individual MAPEI data sheets use product-specific factors in their coverage formulas. That is why this calculator has no invented default density.
Worked example you can check by hand
Suppose a repair has 24 m of measured joints. The joints are 3 mm wide and 8 mm deep.
24 × 3 × 8 ÷ 1,000 = 0.576 L
With a 10% allowance:
0.576 × 1.10 = 0.6336 L
If the exact product’s current technical data says one package provides 0.75 usable litres, the package estimate is:
round up(0.6336 ÷ 0.75) = 1 package
The 0.576 L value is pure geometry. The 0.75 L package yield is product information and must come from the label, current technical data sheet or manufacturer’s calculator.
Why the package label outranks a generic formula
Manufacturers describe coverage as approximate because real consumption changes with actual joint width and depth, tile or stone type, installation method, surface roughness, residual material and uneven surfaces. LATICRETE explicitly notes those variables in its cement grout guidance, and the MAPEI grout calculator likewise says its estimate cannot account for tile roughness, excess residue or surface irregularity.
Use this order of preference for buying material:
- A coverage or yield figure for the exact product, tile size and joint dimensions.
- The exact product’s total usable mixed mass, including prescribed liquids/components, plus its published mixed density.
- Geometric litres alone, used as a comparison figure while you obtain product data.
Never convert litres to kilograms with an assumed “standard grout density.” A dry bag weight is not a mixed usable mass. Confirm that the stated mass includes every prescribed liquid or component and that the published yield describes mixed, usable product rather than dry powder volume.
Allowance: what it does and does not cover
Allowance covers ordinary estimating losses such as:
- joints that are slightly wider or deeper than the nominal measurement;
- grout held in tile texture or pores;
- residue removed during cleanup;
- material left on tools or in the mixing container;
- small spills and unusable remainder.
It does not fix a wrong layout, an incorrect product yield or missing movement joints. Manufacturer guidance may recommend a particular addition for waste, spillage, cleanup or porous tile. Follow the current data sheet for your chosen product rather than applying one percentage to every installation.
Mosaics, pebbles and irregular patterns
Regular-area mode assumes rectangular tiles in a repeating grid. It is not a reliable model for pebble sheets, random mosaics, fan patterns, heavily pillowed edges, handmade tiles with variable joints or mixed-size modules. These layouts can contain much more joint length and uneven depth than a nominal tile size suggests.
For a small repair, measure the visible joint runs and use measured-length mode. For a whole irregular field, use the manufacturer’s coverage chart for that mosaic or make a representative test panel, record how much product it consumes and scale cautiously. Do not treat the mesh sheet’s outside dimensions as one large tile: the joints inside the sheet are the main source of grout consumption.
Keep movement joints out of the grout quantity
Do not fill designed movement joints, control joints, changes of plane or perimeter movement spaces with rigid grout unless the project specification explicitly calls for it. These locations commonly require a compatible flexible sealant and joint design. LATICRETE’s grout guidance identifies movement joints, control joints, cold joints, corners, coves and perimeters as locations that need separate treatment. CUSTOM Building Products describes its 100% silicone sealant for corners, changes of plane and expansion joints and references TCNA EJ171 movement-joint guidance.
Subtract those runs from a measured grout length. Estimate the sealant separately using the sealant manufacturer’s joint-size coverage information.
Product and handling checks before work starts
- Confirm the grout is approved for the tile or stone, joint width, substrate, location and exposure.
- Read the current technical data sheet for mixing, pot life, cleaning, curing and coverage.
- Read the safety data sheet for the exact product and follow its protective-equipment and first-aid instructions.
- Keep dry cementitious dust out of the air and protect skin and eyes. OSHA notes skin and eye hazards from Portland cement and advises consulting the manufacturer’s safety data sheet; its guidance also warns that wet Portland cement can damage skin.
- Make a test area when staining, scratching, haze or colour compatibility is a concern.
- Buy compatible batches where the manufacturer recommends it and keep enough material to complete a visually continuous area.

No. Use the depth that will actually be filled. Adhesive, backing, existing material or the joint profile can make the fill shallower than the tile. Measure a representative joint and follow the grout manufacturer’s minimum-depth requirements.
There is no trustworthy universal density for grout. Cementitious, epoxy and ready-to-use products differ, and manufacturers use product-specific density or coverage values. Enter a value only when it comes from the exact product’s current documentation.
No. It counts internal joints between tiles only. Perimeters and changes of plane may be movement joints requiring flexible sealant, so they should not be silently added as grout.
Use the manufacturer’s mosaic-specific coverage information whenever possible. For a small irregular repair, measured joint length is safer than treating the whole sheet as one tile. Random pebbles and mixed modules are outside the regular rectangular-grid model.
Start with the exact manufacturer’s allowance guidance. Texture, porosity, uneven joints and cleanup method all change consumption. The calculator lets you add an allowance, but it cannot know the condition of the tiles or the losses from your installation method.
Do not assume so. Corners, perimeters, changes of plane and designed movement joints commonly need a compatible flexible sealant rather than rigid grout. Follow the project specification, applicable movement-joint guidance and the product manufacturers’ instructions.
