Gematria assigns a numeric value to each letter and sums them to give a word or phrase a single number. How the ciphers are defined

Every English-gematria cipher starts from the letter position in the alphabet and applies a rule:

  • Simple / Ordinal, A=1, B=2 … Z=26. The most widely used English scheme.
  • Full Reduction, reduce each ordinal value to a single digit with the digital root: ((n − 1) mod 9) + 1, giving 1-9.
  • Reverse Ordinal, the alphabet runs backwards: A=26, B=25 … Z=1, i.e. 27 − ordinal.
  • Reverse Reduction, the digital root of the Reverse Ordinal value.
  • Sumerian, Ordinal multiplied by 6 (A=6, B=12 … Z=156).
  • Jewish / Latin (Agrippa), A-I = 1-9, J-R = 10-90 in tens, S-Z = 100-800 in hundreds.

Worked example

For the word GOD in Ordinal: G=7, O=15, D=4, so the total is 7 + 15 + 4 = 26. In Full Reduction: 7 + 6 + 4 = 17. In Sumerian: 42 + 90 + 24 = 156.

Common pitfalls

  • Spaces and punctuation are skipped. Only A-Z letters carry a value; digits and symbols add nothing to the total.
  • Different sites use different ciphers. A value you saw elsewhere may use a scheme this tool labels differently, always check which cipher is meant.
  • Gematria is not cryptography. It is a numerology and word-play technique, not a way to keep a message secret.
