Flow Rate Calculator
Enter the inner diameter of a circular pipe and the speed of the fluid moving through it, and this calculator returns the volumetric flow rate using Q = A·v. It first works out the pipe's cross-sectional area from the diameter, then multiplies by velocity to give the flow in cubic metres per second (m³/s), litres per minute (L/min) and US gallons per minute (GPM). It is handy for plumbing, irrigation, HVAC duct sizing and physics problems. The values you enter are sent to our server so the calculation can run as you type. They are not stored or shared.
How it works
-
1
Enter the pipe diameter
Type the inner diameter of the pipe in millimetres. The tool converts it to metres and finds the circular area.
-
2
Enter the flow velocity
Type the average fluid speed in metres per second. The tool multiplies area by velocity.
-
3
Read the flow rate
See the volumetric flow rate in m³/s, plus litres per minute and US gallons per minute.
The flow rate formula
Volumetric flow rate is the cross-sectional area of the pipe multiplied by the fluid velocity:
Q = A · v
For a round pipe the area comes from the diameter:
A = π · (d ÷ 2)²
Where:
- Q = volumetric flow rate (cubic metres per second, m³/s)
- A = cross-sectional area of the pipe (square metres, m²)
- v = average flow velocity (metres per second, m/s)
- d = inner diameter of the pipe (metres, m)
- π ≈ 3.14159
The diameter is entered in millimetres here, so it is divided by 1000 before the area is calculated. The continuity principle (A·v is constant for an incompressible fluid) means that if the pipe narrows, the velocity must rise to keep Q the same.
Worked example
Water flows through a pipe with an inner diameter of 100 mm at a velocity of 2 m/s.
- d = 100 mm = 0.1 m, so the radius r = 0.05 m
- A = π × (0.05)² = π × 0.0025 ≈ 0.007854 m²
- Q = A × v = 0.007854 × 2 ≈ 0.015708 m³/s
Convert to the everyday units:
- L/min = 0.015708 × 60000 ≈ 942.5 L/min
- US GPM = 0.015708 × 15850.3 ≈ 249.0 GPM
Quick reference (d = 100 mm pipe)
| Velocity (m/s) | Flow Q (m³/s) | Flow (L/min) | Flow (US GPM) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5 | 0.003927 | 235.6 | 62.3 |
| 1.0 | 0.007854 | 471.2 | 124.5 |
| 2.0 | 0.015708 | 942.5 | 249.0 |
| 3.0 | 0.023562 | 1413.7 | 373.5 |
Common pitfalls
- Mixing units. Diameter must be the inner bore, not the outer or nominal size. A nominal “100 mm” pipe often has a different real internal diameter, and that small difference is squared, so it matters.
- Imperial vs US gallons. This tool uses US gallons (1 US GPM ≈ 3.785 L/min). The UK imperial gallon is about 20% larger, so do not mix the two.
- Average vs peak velocity. In real pipes the flow is faster in the centre and slower near the walls. The v you enter should be the average velocity across the section.
- Zero or empty input. A diameter or velocity of 0 simply yields a flow rate of 0 here rather than an error.
Frequently Asked Questions
Flow rate equals area times velocity: Q = A · v. For a round pipe the area is A = π · (d ÷ 2)², so the diameter and the fluid speed together determine the flow in m³/s.
Multiply cubic metres per second by 60000 to get litres per minute, and by about 15850.3 to get US gallons per minute. For example, 0.015708 m³/s ≈ 942.5 L/min ≈ 249 GPM. The calculator does both conversions for you.
Always use the inner diameter (the bore through which fluid actually flows). Using the outer diameter or the nominal pipe size overstates the area, and because the diameter is squared the error is amplified.
