Fiscal Year Calculator

Next

Enter a date and the month your fiscal year starts in, and the calculator returns the fiscal year label for that date, for example FY2026. It works with any start month from January to December, so you can use it for the US federal year, the UK tax year, the Indian or Japanese fiscal year, or a custom corporate fiscal calendar.

  3. 3

    Read the output

Corporate fiscal years

Many large companies use non-calendar fiscal years that align with their industry’s seasonality:

Company Fiscal year start Why
Apple Last Saturday of Sep End of summer before holiday quarter
Microsoft Jul 1 Out of sync with calendar for tax reasons
Walmart Feb 1 Avoids peak-holiday inventory disruption
Cisco Last Saturday of Jul 52/53-week retail calendar

52/53-week retail calendar

Some retailers use a 52/53-week fiscal year, also called the “4-4-5” calendar. Each quarter is a fixed pattern of weeks (4-4-5 or 4-5-4), so every quarter contains exactly the same number of weekends. Every 5-6 years a 53rd week is added to stay aligned with the solar year.

Common mistakes

  • UK tax year off-by-one. The UK personal tax year starts on April 6, not April 1, a legacy of the 1752 calendar switch.
  • Confusing US fiscal year with calendar year. A US federal budget signed on December 15 2024 is already fiscal year 2025, not 2024.
  • Indian FY notation. FY2024-25 means April 2024 to March 2025; FY2025 alone is ambiguous in Indian context.

Frequently Asked Questions

A 12-month period an organization uses for financial reporting and budgeting. It does not have to align with the calendar year, governments and companies pick start dates that match their seasonality.

When Britain switched from the Julian to the Gregorian calendar in 1752, eleven days were dropped. To avoid losing those days of tax revenue, the treasury moved the tax year start from March 25 to April 5, later adjusted to April 6.

Be careful, they rarely mean the same period. US FY2024 is Oct 2023 - Sep 2024. Japanese FY2024 is Apr 2024 - Mar 2025. Always label ranges explicitly when mixing jurisdictions.

A retail fiscal calendar that divides each quarter into three months of 4 weeks, 4 weeks and 5 weeks (or some permutation like 4-5-4). It keeps the same number of weekends in each quarter, which makes year-on-year comparisons cleaner for retailers.
