FFMI Calculator
Enter your weight, height and body-fat percentage and the calculator returns your Fat-Free Mass Index (FFMI), a way to size up how much lean tissue you carry relative to your height, independent of fat. It also reports the height-normalized FFMI used to compare people of different statures, your total fat-free mass in kilograms, and where you sit against the roughly 25 ceiling that drug-free trainees rarely cross. Think of it as a more muscle-aware companion to BMI.
How FFMI is calculated
-
1
Enter weight and height
Pick metric (kg / cm) or imperial (lb / in). Values are converted to kilograms and metres internally.
-
2
Add your body-fat percentage
From a DEXA scan, calipers or a bioimpedance scale. This separates lean mass from fat mass.
-
3
Read FFMI and normalized FFMI
FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) / height (m)². The normalized figure adjusts for height so tall and short lifters compare fairly.
The formula
FFMI strips fat out of the picture so you are measuring muscle and frame, not total weight:
Fat-free mass (kg) = weight (kg) × (1 − body fat% / 100)
FFMI = fat-free mass (kg) / height (m)²
Normalized FFMI = FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in m)
The normalization term nudges the score so that someone shorter or taller than 1.8 m is compared on equal footing, without it, shorter athletes score artificially high.
Worked example
A lifter weighs 85 kg at 180 cm with 12% body fat:
- Fat-free mass = 85 × (1 − 0.12) = 74.8 kg
- Height² = 1.8 × 1.8 = 3.24 m²
- FFMI = 74.8 / 3.24 = 23.1
- Normalized FFMI = 23.1 + 6.1 × (1.8 − 1.8) = 23.1 (no adjustment, since height is exactly 1.8 m)
That puts them in the excellent band, lean and well-muscled, but still inside what is achievable without drugs.
Typical ranges
| Normalized FFMI | Interpretation |
|---|---|
| 18 – 20 | Average, untrained to lightly trained |
| 20 – 22 | Above average, visibly muscular |
| 22 – 25 | Excellent, near the natural ceiling |
| > 25 | Unusually high, often a sign of PED use |
Pitfalls
- Garbage in, garbage out. FFMI is only as good as your body-fat number. A scale that under-reads fat will inflate your FFMI.
- It is not a drug test. A normalized FFMI above 25 is uncommon naturally, but rare genetic outliers and measurement error exist. Treat it as a flag, not proof.
- Very lean or very heavy people can see distorted scores; the model assumes a plausible body-fat reading.
Frequently Asked Questions
For most trained men a normalized FFMI of 20-22 is solidly muscular, and 22-25 is excellent and close to the natural limit. Women typically run a few points lower at the same training level. Untrained adults often sit around 18-19.
A widely cited study of drug-free and steroid-using athletes found that essentially no drug-free lifter exceeded a normalized FFMI of about 25, while many enhanced athletes did. It is a population pattern, not a hard physical law, so treat values just above 25 as a flag rather than proof.
BMI uses total weight, so a muscular person looks “overweight”. FFMI removes fat first and measures only lean mass relative to height, so it rewards muscle instead of penalising it. They answer different questions.
The values are not stored anywhere. They are sent to our servers as part of the normal page interaction, and in the step-by-step version they are also carried in the page link. Nothing is saved to a database, and on the single-page view refreshing the page clears them.
