Tips for believable fakes

  • Use a plausible timestamp. Fresh tweets show 1m, 2h, Apr 17. Older ones show full dates. Don’t put 3h on a tweet with 4 million likes.
  • Counter sanity. A tweet with 900k likes but 42 replies and 12 reposts looks off. Real viral tweets have replies in the thousands and reposts in the hundreds of thousands.
  • Real handle rules. X handles are 4-15 characters, no spaces, underscores allowed. @a and @this_is_way_too_long_handle break the mask.
  • Link previews. Use the optional card and drop in a real URL, the preview image and host will populate automatically.

Where fake tweets are fine

  • Editorial pieces that quote a tweet but need to anonymize the poster.
  • Books, films and TV shows that need on-screen tweets without licensing every real one.
  • Talks about social-media behaviour where you want to isolate a specific UI detail.

Where they are not fine

Do not publish a fake tweet attributed to a real, identifiable person. Do not use fake tweets to mislead markets, elections or reporters. Label every fabricated screenshot as illustrative in the surrounding text and, when stakes are high, watermark the image itself.
