Tips for believable fakes

• Match subreddit tone. A /r/AskReddit title looks different from a /r/programming title. Read three top posts from the target sub before writing yours.
• Use realistic numbers. A brand-new post with 47k upvotes is a giveaway. Fresh posts typically have 1-20 upvotes in the first hour.
• Karma-formatted counts. Reddit shows 1.2k not 1234; the generator formats counts the same way.
• Check username length. Real handles are 3-20 characters. u/a and u/the_longest_username_you_can_imagine_xyz both break the mask.

Where fake Reddit posts show up

• Case studies in social media courses, where a sanitized thread stands in for a real one that cannot be shown with real usernames.
• Video essays and news explainers that need to reference a style of post without citing the original (to avoid harassment of real users).
• Internal comms mockups, HR teams testing how a fake complaint thread would render if the channel launched.

What to avoid

Do not stage a fake Reddit post that names a real person, a real business or a real handle and presents it as genuine. It is defamation at worst and harassment-facilitation at best. Use clearly fictional handles (u/throwaway_example, u/testuser_2026) and a subreddit that obviously does not exist.
