Fake chat screenshots are a legitimate communication tool when they are clearly labeled as mockups. The moment they are used to impersonate a real person or platform, they stop being design assets and become misinformation.

Each line represents one bubble. Use a simple prefix to choose the side and direction:

Bad use cases

  • Impersonating a real platform (Messenger, WhatsApp, iMessage) in a way that suggests the screenshot is genuine. That is deceptive and can violate the platform’s trademark policy.
  • Fabricating evidence. Court-admissible evidence must come from the real conversation; a mocked screenshot is worthless and legally risky.
  • Defamation. Putting fake statements in a real person’s mouth is defamation in most jurisdictions, regardless of the medium.

Attribution tip

When you publish a mockup in a blog post or slide deck, add a small Mockup badge in the corner or in the caption. Readers trust you more when you are explicit about what is real and what is illustrative.
