Running short on drywall mid-hang means a second trip to the lumber yard and a panel seam that never quite lines up. Enter your room length, width and ceiling height, choose whether you are boarding the ceiling, pick a 4×8 or 4×12 sheet, and set a waste percentage. The calculator returns the total surface area, the number of sheets to buy, and matching estimates for screws, joint compound and tape so you can shop the whole job in one go.

How the drywall estimate is calculated

The formula

The calculator first works out the surface area to cover:

  • Wall area = 2 × (length + width) × ceiling height
  • Ceiling area = length × width (added only if you include the ceiling)
  • Total area = wall area + ceiling area (or your entered wall area)

Then it converts area into materials:

  • Sheets = ⌈ total area × (1 + waste ÷ 100) ÷ sheet area ⌉, where a 4×8 sheet = 32 sq ft and a 4×12 sheet = 48 sq ft
  • Screws = sheets × 32 (a standard count for a 16-inch stud layout)
  • Joint compound = total area × 0.053 lbs
  • Tape = total area × 0.5 ft

Sheets are always rounded up, you cannot buy a fraction of a panel.

Worked example

A 12 ft × 12 ft room with 8 ft ceilings, boarding the ceiling too, using 4×8 sheets and a 10% waste margin:

  • Wall area: 2 × (12 + 12) × 8 = 384 sq ft
  • Ceiling area: 12 × 12 = 144 sq ft
  • Total area: 384 + 144 = 528 sq ft
  • With 10% waste: 528 × 1.10 = 580.8 sq ft
  • Sheets: 580.8 ÷ 32 = 18.15 → round up to 19 sheets
  • Screws: 19 × 32 = 608
  • Joint compound: 528 × 0.053 ≈ 28 lbs
  • Tape: 528 × 0.5 = 264 ft

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Skipping waste. Off-cuts around windows, doors and outlets add up fast, 10% is a sensible floor, 15% for rooms with many openings.
  • Forgetting the ceiling. A boarded ceiling can add 25-40% more area; leave the toggle on if you are hanging it.
  • Buying short on screws. Edges need more fasteners than the field; the 32-per-sheet figure assumes 16-inch stud spacing.
  • Underestimating mud. Three coats over taped seams use more compound than people expect, round the lbs figure up and keep a spare bucket.

Frequently Asked Questions

Only if you are hanging drywall on it. If the ceiling is already finished, plastered, or you are leaving exposed joists, turn the toggle off so its area is not counted. A boarded ceiling typically adds 25-40% more sheets to a square room.

Start at 10% for a simple rectangular room. Use 15% or more for rooms with lots of windows, doors, angled walls or short runs, where off-cuts are harder to reuse. The calculator always rounds the final sheet count up.

4×8 sheets (32 sq ft) are lighter and easier to handle solo. 4×12 sheets (48 sq ft) cover more area with fewer butt seams, which means less taping and mudding on long walls or ceilings, but they are heavy and usually need two people.
