Decision Maker
Pizza or sushi, bathroom pink or bathroom sage, contract A or contract B: when every option is roughly fine, the best thing you can do is stop deliberating. This decision maker accepts any list of choices, one per line, and picks one using a cryptographically strong random generator so ties really are neutral.
How to use the decision maker
-
1
Enter your options
Type each option on its own line. Every line is treated as one candidate; commas do not split options.
-
2
Repeat a favorite to tilt the odds
Each line has the same chance. List an option twice if you want it twice as likely.
-
3
Run the draw
Click "Decide for me" and the tool makes a fresh random draw from your list.
-
4
Re-roll or keep
If the result gives you a gut reaction, you have your answer. If not, decide again.
Why random works (when the choices are close)
The “gut check” test is older than decision theory: flip a coin and notice whether you feel relieved or disappointed with the result. The coin itself does not matter; the signal is in your reaction. Random selection is surprisingly effective when:
- The options have similar value.
- The cost of deciding is higher than the cost of a wrong choice.
- Deliberation has run in circles for more than an hour.
Tilt the odds by repeating a line
By default every option has a 1 in N chance. There is no special weight syntax; repeating a line is how you tilt the draw without eliminating anything:
| Input | Resulting odds |
|---|---|
Italian and Thai |
50% / 50% |
Italian twice and Thai |
66.7% / 33.3% |
Italian three times and Thai |
75% / 25% |
Italian nine times and Thai |
90% / 10% |
Use repetition when one option is your honest favorite but you want to keep the door open for surprise.
When not to use a random draw
- High-stakes decisions. Job offers, medical choices, marriage: use a structured framework instead.
- Decisions with an obvious best. If you already know the answer, do not outsource it.
- Decisions someone else should make. Random picks are for personal ties only.
Tip: keep a list of small weekly decisions
Feed the tool recurring small choices (lunch spot, weekend activity, which tab to close) and your brain frees up capacity for the ones that genuinely need thought.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. Each pick is drawn on the server with a cryptographically secure random function (random_int) that reads from the operating system entropy pool. The same kind of source is used for encryption keys, so bias is not a practical concern.
Yes. Listing an option twice doubles its chance compared with any option listed once. There is no special syntax: repeating a line is the tool’s built-in way to tilt the odds.
There is no hard cap. The picker handles hundreds of entries without noticeable delay, though scrolling through a 200-entry list tends to be a signal that you need to prune, not spin.
No. Every spin is independent, and nothing is saved between sessions. Close the tab and the list is gone.
