Charades Generator
Charades is the classic party game where one player acts out a word or phrase in silence while the rest of the group races to guess it. The hard part has always been thinking of fair prompts on the spot. This generator does it for you: pick a category, movies, actions, animals or jobs, choose an easy, medium or hard difficulty, and draw one or several prompts at random. A reveal button hides each answer until the actor is ready, and an optional 60-second countdown enforces the standard one-minute round. Everything runs in your browser, so it works just as well at a sleepover, a classroom or an office team-building session.
How to play charades
-
1
Pick a category and difficulty
Choose movies, actions, animals, jobs or all, then set the difficulty tier (easy, medium, hard or all).
-
2
Generate and reveal
Draw a random prompt; only the actor taps Reveal so the rest of the group never sees the answer.
-
3
Act it out within the time limit
Start the optional 60-second timer, mime the prompt with no talking, and let the team guess before the clock runs out.
The rules of charades
Charades has no single official rulebook, but almost every group plays by the same core conventions. One player draws a prompt and acts it out in complete silence, no talking, no mouthing words, no pointing at objects in the room. Teammates shout guesses until someone gets it or time expires. A round is traditionally capped at 60 seconds, which is why this generator includes a one-minute timer.
A handful of standard hand signals keep things moving:
| Signal | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Hold up fingers | Number of words in the phrase |
| Tug your earlobe | “Sounds like…” |
| Frame a rectangle | It’s a movie |
| Open palms like a book | It’s a book or title |
| Thumb over shoulder | “Past tense” / earlier |
A worked example
Say the generator draws Jurassic Park (category: movies, difficulty: easy). The actor frames a rectangle to signal a film, holds up two fingers for two words, then mimes a roaring dinosaur and a swinging gate. Most groups land it within 20–30 seconds. Harder prompts like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind demand breaking the title into syllables and acting each chunk, that is exactly why the difficulty tiers exist.
Common pitfalls
- Talking or lip-syncing. The single most-broken rule; agree on a penalty (skip the turn) before you start.
- Prompts that don’t match the crowd. Adults can handle the hard movie tier; young children do better with the easy animals bank.
- No time limit. Without the 60-second cap, rounds drag and the energy dies. Use the built-in timer.
- Repeating the same prompt. Regenerate for a fresh draw; the picker shuffles the whole filtered pool each time.
Keep teams to four to six players, alternate actors every round, and switch categories when the group tires of one, variety is what keeps a charades night alive.

Tick “Start timer” and each time you generate a prompt a 60-second countdown begins, matching the standard charades round length. The number turns red in the final ten seconds.
Yes. Set the count up to 10 to generate several prompts at once, handy for handing out a stack to multiple teams or planning a whole game in advance.
No. The word banks ship with the page and every random draw happens in your browser. Nothing about your game is uploaded, stored or tracked.
