Why surveying sometimes uses “US survey foot”

The US survey foot (1200/3937 m, roughly 0.3048006 m) differs from the international foot (exactly 0.3048 m) by 2 parts per million. For everyday conversions the difference is invisible, but for legal land surveys and geodetic work in some US states it matters. The US officially retired the survey foot at the end of 2022.

Frequently Asked Questions

Exactly 1 m² = 10.76391041671 ft². The factor comes from squaring the foot-to-meter conversion (0.3048 m/ft). For casual estimates, use 10.76.

1,000 ft² = 92.903 m². Roughly the size of a two-bedroom apartment in North America or a one-bedroom in a European city.

Almost never for residential. Federal agriculture statistics and international comparisons use hectares. Private US real estate listings are almost always in square feet or acres.

All three mean the same. “ft²” is the SI-style superscript notation. “sq ft” is the traditional English abbreviation. “sqft” is a compact variant popular in real estate websites. Use whichever your audience expects.
