  • IPv4 is the classic four-number format (203.0.113.42). Only about 4.3 billion addresses exist, which ran out years ago — so most ISPs now share one public IPv4 among many customers using CGNAT (carrier-grade NAT).
  • IPv6 uses eight groups of hex digits (2001:db8::a1:b2). There are roughly 3.4 × 10^38 of them — enough to give every grain of sand on Earth a unique address — so each device can have its own.

Most home connections are now dual-stack (both work), and which one you see here simply depends on which your browser preferred for this request. Mobile networks are increasingly IPv6-first. Seeing an IPv6 address is normal and not a problem.

How a VPN or proxy changes what you see

Your public IP normally belongs to your ISP and roughly reflects where you are. A VPN or proxy sits between you and the internet, so the address shown here becomes the VPN server’s address instead of yours:

  • The IP — and usually the country — changes to the VPN exit location.

For most people, no. A public IP on its own reveals far less than people fear:

  • It does not reveal your name, your street address or your exact location — only your ISP, via a court order, can link an IP to a subscriber. Public databases show the city-scale location of the provider’s equipment, not your home.
  • The realistic risks are coarse-grained: an IP can be used to roughly estimate your region, to target a denial-of-service flood, or as one weak signal in tracking. Sharing it in a support ticket or with a sysadmin you trust is routine and safe.
  • If you want to hide it, use a VPN or proxy — that replaces your visible IP with the server’s.

Legitimate everyday uses
