Well Pump Size Calculator
Set the residential peak demand
Use the Michigan planning table or enter a complete custom simultaneous demand for your property.
Estimate the flow and total dynamic head a pump must deliver for a residential private-well system. Use the Michigan 7-minute method for a jurisdiction-specific planning estimate, or enter a known peak demand. The calculator combines pumping water level, elevation rise, pressure head and friction loss, then compares demand with the well’s sustainable yield. It defines a duty point for checking manufacturer pump curves; it does not select horsepower, a pump model or a nominal tank size.
How to estimate a residential well-pump duty point
-
1
Set the peak flow
Choose the Michigan bathroom-based planning method or enter a measured or professionally calculated residential peak demand.
-
2
Enter the pumping conditions
Use the water level while pumping (not total well depth or the resting static level), then add elevation rise, delivery pressure and estimated pipe-and-fitting friction.
-
3
Review head and well yield
Use the flow-plus-TDH duty point to read a manufacturer curve, and investigate any sustainable-yield deficit with a qualified well contractor.
What the calculator actually sizes
A well pump is checked at a duty point: the required flow at the required total dynamic head (TDH). A label such as “10 GPM” is incomplete unless the pump can still deliver 10 GPM against the system head. Use both results on the manufacturer’s performance curve.
The calculator uses:
TDH = pumping water level + elevation rise + pressure head + friction loss
For US units, pressure head (ft) = pressure (psi) × 2.3067. For metric units, pressure head (m) = pressure (bar) × 10.1972. Franklin Water describes TDH as the sum of pumping water level, above-ground pressure converted to head and column friction loss.
Pumping water level matters. It is the depth to water while the well is producing at the design flow. Static water level is measured when the well is at rest, and total well depth may extend far below the water surface. Substituting either can materially misstate the lift. A pump or step-drawdown test is the appropriate source for pumping level and sustainable yield; Penn State Extension explains that sustained pumping capacity requires a pump test.
Michigan 7-minute planning method
The optional bathroom estimate reproduces the residential table in the State of Michigan Water Well Manual. It includes kitchen-sink, washing-machine and dishwasher use, but not simultaneous irrigation, farm or fire demand.
| Bathrooms | Published 7-minute demand | Planning pump flow |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 45 gal | 7 GPM |
| 1.5 | 70 gal | 10 GPM |
| 2–2.5 | 98 gal | 14 GPM |
| 3–4 | 122 gal | 17 GPM |
This is a Michigan planning method, not a universal code rule. Select custom demand when local requirements, measured fixture flow or a professional design gives a different value.
Interpreting a yield shortfall
The sustainable-yield margin is well yield − peak flow. If it is negative, the displayed short-peak deficit is:
theoretical deficit = max(0, peak volume − sustainable yield × peak duration)
Table mode uses the Michigan method’s seven-minute duration; custom mode uses the duration you enter.
For example, a 98-gallon table demand and an 8 GPM sustainable yield produce a theoretical 42-gallon gap during seven minutes. That number is a screening estimate, not a pressure-tank drawdown or recommended storage-tank capacity. It assumes the stated well yield continues throughout the peak and ignores usable borehole water, pump cycling and reserve. Penn State’s low-yield well guidance explains why a pressure tank provides limited usable storage and why an intermediate storage system may need a separate design.
Before choosing equipment
- Confirm pumping level and sustainable yield from current test data, especially after drought or changes in well performance.
- Estimate friction at the intended flow using the actual pipe length, diameter, material, valves and fittings.
- Check that the selected pump curve passes through the flow/TDH duty point with an appropriate operating range.
- Have a licensed or otherwise locally qualified well professional verify pump setting, electrical supply, cycling protection, pressure-tank drawdown and applicable code.
Frequently Asked Questions
Enter pumping water level: the vertical depth to the water surface while the well is producing at the design flow. Total well depth and static water level describe different conditions and should not be substituted unless a qualified designer has intentionally accounted for them.
No. It estimates a flow-and-TDH duty point. Compare that point with manufacturer performance curves, then have a qualified installer account for efficiency, motor and electrical requirements, pump setting, casing, controls and local rules before selecting equipment.
No. It is only the theoretical difference between peak demand and sustainable well production over the selected peak duration; table mode uses seven minutes. Nominal tank volume is not usable drawdown, and a low-yield system may require professionally designed intermediate storage and pump controls.
No. It is a convenient residential planning table published by Michigan and may differ from your jurisdiction, household pattern or fixture schedule. Use custom demand when local code, measured flow or a well professional provides a more appropriate design value.
There is no file upload. Values entered in this Livewire tool are sent to the server so it can calculate and display the estimate. Enter only system measurements; no name, address or other personal information is needed.
