A US gallon is 3.785 litres; a UK imperial gallon is 4.546 litres. A US cup is about 236.6 ml; a metric cup is 250 ml. Recipe sites and tank specs mix these up and hand you the wrong answer. This converter works in eleven units: millilitres, centilitres, litres and cubic metres on the metric side, plus the US teaspoon, tablespoon, fluid ounce, cup, pint, quart and gallon on the customary side. Its cooking and gallon units are the US measures, so every conversion stays on the same system.

How to convert volume

  1. 1

    Enter the amount

Type the number you want to convert. Enter part of a unit as a decimal (for example 1.5), not as a fraction.

  2. 2

Choose the unit to convert from

Pick the source unit, anything from millilitres up to US gallons.

  3. 3

Choose the unit to convert to

Pick the target unit. The Swap button flips the two with one click.

  4. 4

    Read the result

The converted amount appears instantly and updates as you change the number or the units. Use Copy to grab it.

Quick reference: what 1 litre equals

Unit Amount in 1 litre
Millilitres (ml) 1000
Centilitres (cl) 100
Cubic metres (m³) 0.001
US teaspoons 202.884
US tablespoons 67.628
US fluid ounces 33.814
US cups 4.2268
US pints 2.1134
US quarts 1.0567
US gallons 0.26417

Every conversion in this tool is built from these US customary factors, so a “gallon” here always means the US gallon (3.785 L), never the UK imperial gallon (4.546 L).

Where the variants trip people up

  • US vs imperial gallons. This tool uses the US gallon (3.785 L). The UK imperial gallon (4.546 L) is about 20% larger, so a figure from a British source will not match. The tool does not convert imperial units.
  • US vs imperial fluid ounces. The US fluid ounce is 29.57 ml; the imperial one is 28.41 ml. This tool uses the US value.
  • Dry vs fluid pints. The pint here is the US liquid pint, 473.2 ml. A US dry pint, used for berries and other produce, is 550.6 ml, a different amount entirely.
  • Which cup? The cup here is the US customary cup, 236.6 ml. A metric cup is 250 ml and a Japanese cup is 200 ml, so check the recipe’s own system before you convert.

Cubic volume and capacity

One cubic metre (m³) is exactly 1000 litres, and one cubic centimetre (cc) is one millilitre. Shipping containers and water tanks are usually quoted in cubic metres, while aquariums and fuel are quoted in litres. To turn a cubic-metre reading into litres, multiply by 1000.

Converting in the kitchen

Volume only approximates the mass of dry ingredients: one US cup of flour can weigh anywhere from 120 to 150 g depending on how you scoop it. For reliable baking, weigh dry ingredients in grams instead of converting their volume.

Frequently Asked Questions

The ounce is both a unit of mass (about 28 g) and a unit of fluid volume (about 30 ml). They are unrelated apart from a historical accident in which one ounce of water weighs roughly one fluid ounce. Always check which one your recipe or spec means; this converter handles only the fluid ounce.

US. The gallon, quart, pint, cup, fluid ounce, tablespoon and teaspoon in this tool are all US customary units. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, so a figure taken from the UK, where the imperial gallon is 4.546 litres, will not line up.

No. Enter amounts as decimals with a point, for example 0.5 instead of 1/2 or 1.25 instead of 1 1/4. Anything that is not a plain number will not convert.

The amounts you convert are not stored. Like our other tools, we keep only anonymous usage counts, such as which pairs of units are converted most often.
