Population or sample?

Population variance divides the sum of squared deviations by n. Sample variance divides by n−1, the conventional correction when the values are a sample used to estimate a larger population. NIST defines sample variance with the n−1 denominator. One value has population variance zero, but sample variance is undefined and is therefore not displayed.

Use commas, semicolons or spaces as separators. In decimal-comma locales, write decimals with commas and separate values with semicolons or spaces, for example 1,5; 2,5. The limit is 10,000 finite values. Inputs are sent to the site and may appear in the URL.

Frequently Asked Questions

Use population variance for the complete population and sample variance for a sample intended to estimate a larger population.

Its denominator is n−1, which is zero when n equals one.
