Enter force magnitude, distance from pivot to application point, and the angle between the position vector r and force F.

Formula and direction

The magnitude is τ = rF sinθ, where 0°≤θ≤180°. It is zero when force is parallel to r and maximum at 90°. The tool converts N·m to lb·ft with 1 N·m = 0.737562 lb·ft.

This calculator returns magnitude only. Torque direction or sign requires a stated rotation axis and the right-hand rule; neither is inferred here. It does not sum multiple torques, account for a distributed force, friction or structural limits. Inputs update the site and may appear in the step-flow URL.

Frequently Asked Questions

The smaller included angle from the pivot-to-force position vector r to the force vector F, between 0° and 180°.

No axis or rotational sign convention is supplied, so only magnitude is reported.
