Odds Ratio Calculator

The odds ratio is OR = (a × d) / (b × c). An OR of 1 means the observed odds are equal. Values above 1 mean the outcome has higher odds in group 1, while values below 1 mean lower odds. This is an association measure; it does not by itself establish causation.
Approximate 95% confidence interval
For positive cell counts, the standard error on the logarithmic scale is SE = √(1/a + 1/b + 1/c + 1/d). The interval is calculated as exp(ln(OR) ± 1.96 × SE). Because this is the conventional large-sample log-Wald interval, it can be unreliable when counts are small or sparse.
Worked example
Suppose group 1 has 40 people with the outcome and 10 without it, while group 2 has 20 with the outcome and 30 without it. The odds ratio is (40 × 30) / (10 × 20) = 6. The approximate 95% interval is about 2.45 to 14.68.

Limits and common pitfalls
- Do not confuse odds with probability. Odds of 2 mean two events for every one non-event, corresponding to a probability of two-thirds.
- Reversing the groups or outcome columns produces the reciprocal odds ratio.
- A zero cell makes the uncorrected formula or its logarithm undefined. This calculator reports the result as unavailable rather than silently substituting a correction.
- A wide interval signals imprecision. For small samples, consult an appropriate exact method or a qualified statistician.
- Observational associations may reflect confounding, selection effects or measurement error.

Frequently Asked Questions
It means the observed odds of the outcome are the same in both groups. It does not prove that the groups are identical in every respect.
Odds ratios are positive and usually asymmetric around 1. The logarithm makes the sampling approximation more symmetric before the limits are transformed back.
The ordinary odds ratio or log standard error becomes undefined or infinite. This tool reports the estimate as unavailable and does not automatically apply a continuity correction.
