Duo-tone technique

Map the dark end of the tonal range to one colour and the bright end to another:

  • Spotify signature: deep purple shadows + light green highlights.
  • Warm sunset: deep orange shadows + pale yellow highlights.
  • Moody: navy shadows + pale peach highlights.

Duo-tone works well on portraits because skin-tone lighting translates naturally to the two-colour mapping.

  • 10-20%: subtle mood shift, photo still reads as-is.
  • 30-50%: obvious tint, starts to unify visually with a brand.
  • 60-80%: strong colour wash, photo is secondary to colour.
  • 90-100%: essentially a solid colour with a hint of photo, often too aggressive.

Tinting applies a uniform colour overlay at your chosen opacity. Filters (like sepia or grayscale) apply a matrix transform that varies per pixel. Tinting is simpler and gives you direct control over colour and intensity.

Colour blend mode preserves the photo’s luminance and only applies the hue/saturation of the tint, the photo stays visible while adopting the brand colour. Multiply at 30-50% opacity works too for a richer, slightly darker result.
