What an IBAN contains

An International Bank Account Number starts with a two-letter country or territory code and two check digits. The remaining Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) follows a fixed national pattern. Each registry entry specifies both the total length and which BBAN positions must contain digits, letters or either. The maximum IBAN length is 34 characters.

SWIFT is the Registration Authority for ISO 13616. This validator bundles the 89 prefixes and official test examples in the SWIFT IBAN Registry, Release 102 (June 2026). It does not contact SWIFT, a bank or another service while checking your input.

Electronic and print formats

Electronic IBANs contain no spaces or special characters. Print form groups the same characters in blocks of four for easier reading. The registry’s British example is GB29NWBK60161331926819 electronically and GB29 NWBK 6016 1331 9268 19 in print. Spaces are removed locally; punctuation, non-Latin lookalikes and localized digits are rejected rather than silently changed.

How MOD 97-10 is checked

For the checksum test, the first four characters move to the end and letters become values from 10 for A through 35 for Z. The resulting decimal sequence is far too long for safe ordinary integer conversion, so this tool calculates the remainder one digit at a time. The check passes only when the final remainder is 1. This follows the MOD 97-10 scheme referenced by ISO 13616 and defined by ISO/IEC 7064.

Why independent confirmation still matters

A mathematically consistent IBAN can be invented, closed, unissued or associated with someone other than the intended recipient. Fraudsters can also substitute a different but correctly formed IBAN. Before sending money, compare the details through a trusted channel and use any beneficiary or account-confirmation service offered by your bank. Common failures include omitting one character, swapping adjacent characters, pasting a non-ASCII lookalike and using details copied from an outdated invoice.
