Crypto prices are volatile: check a live feed for the current ETH/USD rate.

NFT listing prices in ETH, gas fees in gwei (a billionth of an ETH), DeFi yields quoted in native tokens: at some point you need the USD figure to know whether an opportunity is worth the click. This converter loads the latest ETH/USD rate from public exchanges and shows the dollar value of any ETH amount. You can also enter a rate of your own.

How to convert ETH and USD

  1. 1

    Enter an amount

Type the amount of ETH you want to convert to US dollars.

  2. 2

    Check the rate

The ETH/USD rate loads automatically from public exchanges such as CoinGecko, Coinbase or Kraken. You can also type your own rate.

  3. 3

    Read the conversion

The tool multiplies your ETH amount by the rate and shows the result in US dollars, with the rate source displayed alongside.

  4. 4

    Refresh the rate

Rates move constantly. Click Refresh rate before a real transaction to pull the latest quote.

ETH denominations

Ethereum amounts are usually expressed in one of three units:

Unit ETH value Use
wei 10^-18 ETH Internal accounting, atomic unit
gwei 10^-9 ETH Gas prices
ETH 1 ETH Display value, market quotes

So 21,000 gas units at 30 gwei costs 0.00063 ETH. At 3,000 USD per ETH, that is 1.89 USD.

Price sources and reliability

  • CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap aggregate data from many exchanges; less prone to single-exchange wick spikes.
  • Exchange-direct quotes (Coinbase, Kraken, Binance) reflect the specific venue; slightly different prices across exchanges are normal.
  • Chainlink oracles are used by DeFi protocols for on-chain pricing; derived from multiple sources with manipulation-resistance properties.

For casual conversion, any aggregator is fine. For contract or legal purposes, check what oracle your counterparty references.

Historical context

ETH has had significant volatility:

  • 2015 launch: ~1 USD
  • 2017 bull: peaked ~1,400
  • 2018-2019 bear: 80-200
  • 2021 bull: peaked ~4,850
  • 2022-2023 bear: 1,000-2,000 range
  • 2024-2025: 2,000-4,000 oscillating

Prices at the moment you read this may differ substantially from the numbers above.

Gas fee context

Gas fees are paid in gwei per gas unit times total gas consumed. Common actions and typical gas:

Action Gas units (typical)
Simple ETH transfer 21,000
ERC-20 transfer 50,000 - 65,000
Uniswap swap 150,000 - 300,000
NFT mint 50,000 - 300,000

At 30 gwei gas price and 3,000 USD/ETH, a simple transfer costs 1.89 USD. A Uniswap swap might cost 18-27 USD.

Network layer 2 savings

Transactions on Arbitrum, Optimism, Base and other L2 networks cost a fraction of mainnet because they batch transactions. A swap that costs 20 USD on mainnet often costs under 1 USD on an L2. Always verify which chain your transaction is on before approving a fee.

Tax implications

In the US, converting between ETH and USD (or even between ETH and another crypto) is a taxable event that realizes gain or loss. Keep records of:

  • Acquisition date and cost basis in USD.
  • Disposal date and proceeds in USD.
  • Fees and gas.

The converter is for information only, not tax advice; consult a crypto-literate CPA for complex situations.

Reliability note

Exchange rates move constantly. For any real transaction, get a fresh quote from the exchange or venue you are transacting through; arbitrage and slippage mean the “listed” price is not necessarily what you will execute at.

Frequently Asked Questions

The rate is fetched when the page loads and shared through a short server-side cache, so many visitors see the same quote. Click Refresh rate for an immediate update. Public API rate limits may slow updates on high traffic days.

Prices vary 0.1-1 percent across exchanges due to liquidity and arbitrage lag. For large transfers, check the specific exchange you are using. For small amounts, the aggregate price is close enough.

The BTC/USD, EUR/USD and currency converters are separate tools. This page specializes in ETH.

The price fetch hits public APIs (CoinGecko, etc.) that may log requests per their own policies. The tool does not tie queries to your account.
