How double-out scoring works
In a standard X01 leg, each player begins on a fixed score such as 301 or 501 and subtracts the value of each visit. A visit is normally up to three darts, so its total can range from 0 to 180. The leg finishes only when the score reaches exactly zero on a double. The 50-point inner bull counts as a double because it is double 25.
This calculator asks for a visit total rather than each dart. A total alone cannot reveal whether the finishing dart landed in a double, so the double-out confirmation matters only when the subtraction would reach zero.

When a visit is a bust
A visit is a bust when it scores more points than remain, leaves a score of 1, or reaches zero without a valid double-out finish. In each case, the entire visit is cancelled and the player returns to the score held before the visit. For example, from 32, a 31 leaves 1 and is a bust. From 40, scoring 40 with a single 20 and a double 10 would not be a valid checkout if the final scoring dart was not the double that brought the score to zero.
Practical scoring tips
- Add only darts that remained in the board and were counted by the scorer.
- Enter the total for the whole visit, not the number left after one dart.
- When a leg ends before the third dart, enter only the darts thrown before the checkout.
- Local leagues can use house rules or formats such as double-in. This calculator applies the usual straight-in, double-out arithmetic for a single visit.
The tool is a quick scoring aid, not an official match record, checkout chart or tournament ruling.
Frequently Asked Questions
A visit is a bust if it takes the score below zero, leaves 1, or reaches zero without ending on a double or inner bull. The score returns to the value it had before that visit.
The 50-point inner bull counts as double 25, so it can finish a standard double-out leg. The 25-point outer bull does not finish a leg by itself unless it leaves another valid score.
Two visits can have the same total but different final darts. The aggregate score does not tell the calculator whether the dart that reached zero was a double, so the confirmation keeps the checkout result honest.
