Cat Age Calculator
The “one cat year = seven human years” rule is wrong — cats age fastest in their first two years (hitting a human age of about 24 by their second birthday) and then slow to roughly four human years per cat year. Enter your cat’s birth date and the calculator returns an accurate human-age equivalent using the veterinary-community consensus mapping, plus life-stage notes (kitten, junior, adult, mature, senior, geriatric).
How cat age in human years is estimated
-
1
Enter your cat's age or birth date
Years and months precision for adult cats; weeks for kittens.
-
2
Vet-adjusted mapping is applied
Year 1 ≈ 15 human years. Year 2 ≈ 24. Each subsequent cat year ≈ 4 human years.
-
3
Life stage is assigned
Kitten (0-6 mo), junior (6 mo-2 yr), adult (3-6 yr), mature (7-10 yr), senior (11-14 yr), geriatric (15+ yr).
-
4
Care suggestions appear
Vaccinations, diet transitions, vet check-up frequency appropriate to the life stage.

| 20 years | 96 years | Geriatric |
What changes at each life stage
- Kitten (0-6 mo): rapid growth, vaccinations, socialisation window. Up to 4 meals/day.
- Junior (7 mo-2 yr): sexual maturity (spay/neuter by 6 months), still growing. Adjust food accordingly.
- Adult (3-6 yr): stable weight and activity. Annual vet check; dental care increasingly important.
- Mature (7-10 yr): metabolism slows. Watch weight; switch to mature-formula food. Consider twice-yearly vet visits.
- Senior (11-14 yr): age-related health screening (kidneys, thyroid). Changes in coat, teeth, mobility.
- Geriatric (15+ yr): proactive management of arthritis, chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism. Quality-of-life conversations.
Indoor vs outdoor life expectancy
- Indoor-only cats: average 13-17 years, many reach 20+.
- Indoor-outdoor: average 8-12 years. Predators, vehicles, disease exposure.
- Outdoor-only / feral: average 2-5 years.
Indoor with regular vet care is by far the largest controllable factor in lifespan.
Breed notes
- Siamese, Burmese, Russian Blue: known for longer lifespans (17-20 years common).
- Maine Coon, Ragdoll: slightly shorter on average (12-15 years).
- Scottish Fold, Munchkin: genetic issues can shorten lifespan. Know your breed’s predispositions.
Frequently Asked Questions
It assumes linear aging, but cats age much faster in their first two years (approaching sexual and social maturity quickly) and then slow. The AAFP/IAMS model reflects veterinary observation of actual feline development.
Most vets use 11+ years (AAFP). Some use 7+ years as the start of preventive senior care screening. The calculator flags both thresholds.
Neutered cats live about 1-2 years longer on average, primarily from reduced roaming, fighting and reproductive cancers. Life stage mapping is otherwise the same.
Each year beyond 20 maps to about 4 human years by convention, but the equivalence becomes fuzzy — very few humans live past 100. The calculator extrapolates but these ages are rare outliers.
