Plan a bracelet size from the measurement that matches how the piece is worn. For a flexible, clasped, hinged or open wrist-sized bracelet, enter your wrist circumference and choose a transparent fit allowance. For a rigid closed bangle that must slide over the hand, measure around the widest part of your compressed hand instead. The calculator reports a target wearing circumference or minimum round-bangle opening in both centimetres and inches, without pretending that the result is a maker’s cut length or a brand-specific size.

How to calculate your bracelet or bangle size

  1. 1

Choose how the piece goes on

Use wrist mode for a flexible, clasped, hinged or open wrist-sized piece. Use slip-on bangle mode only for a rigid closed bangle that passes over the hand.

  2. 2

    Measure the correct circumference

Wrap a flexible tape or non-stretch string around the wrist for wrist mode, or tightly around the widest part of the compressed hand for a slip-on bangle.

  3. 3

Set the allowance and check the result

Choose a visible fit allowance or enter your own. Compare the calculated circumference or round diameter with the exact product chart before ordering or making anything.

Wrist sizing and slip-on bangle sizing are different

A bracelet that opens can be sized from the wrist. A rigid closed bangle has to clear the hand first, so wrist circumference alone can produce an opening that never goes on. Measure with the same firm, level tension each time; if you use string, mark the meeting point and measure it flat against a ruler.

The calculator uses these planning formulas:

  • Wrist mode: C = W + A, where W is wrist circumference and A is the chosen fit allowance. The built-in starting points add 1.0 cm for close, 1.5 cm for comfortable and 2.0 cm for loose fit. Custom mode uses the allowance you enter.
  • Slip-on round bangle mode: P = H + B, where H is the tight circumference around the widest compressed hand and B is optional clearance. For a truly round opening, D = P ÷ π gives the minimum geometric inner diameter.
  • Unit conversion: the calculator uses the exact NIST relationship 1 inch = 2.54 centimetres.

Why one universal bracelet rule would be misleading

Brand guidance does not use one universal allowance. The Cartier bracelet guide recommends measuring the thickest part of the wrist, mentions adding 1 cm for a loose fit, and warns that sizing can differ by collection and model. Tiffany’s guide distinguishes snug cuffs and bangles from link and chain bracelets that need movement room. Pandora’s guide publishes different wrist-to-product mappings by bracelet family and advises moving up when between sizes.

That disagreement is why the presets here are visible arithmetic, not claims about a universal jewellery standard. Charms occupy space, large beads reduce the usable inside path, leather and cord can change with wear, and a maker may define “size” as an end-to-end product length rather than inner circumference. Use the result to narrow the choice, then follow the current chart for the exact collection.

Do not treat the number as fabrication length

The target wearing circumference is not automatically the amount of chain, elastic, cord or wire to cut. Clasps, crimps, knots, findings, material stretch, bead diameter and construction method all change the required stock. Likewise, D = P ÷ π describes only a round opening. An oval bangle with the same perimeter can have a different minimum width and may pass over the hand differently.

Frequently Asked Questions

Measure the wrist for a bracelet that opens, flexes, hinges or is otherwise fitted at the wrist. For a rigid closed slip-on bangle, measure tightly around the widest part of the compressed hand, usually with the thumb folded toward the little finger.

The comfortable preset adds 1.5 cm, while close and loose add 1.0 cm and 2.0 cm. These are transparent planning allowances, not universal retail sizes. Bracelet construction, charms, bead size and the maker’s chart can justify a different allowance, so custom mode is available.

No. The diameter is perimeter ÷ π for a round opening based on the hand circumference and clearance entered. Real hands are not circular, while bangles may be oval, thick, sculpted or measured under a brand-specific convention. Confirm the product’s inner dimensions and return policy.

No. It is a target wearing or inner circumference. A fabrication cut length must account for the exact clasp, findings, knots, overlaps, bead diameter, material stretch and construction method. Follow the pattern, hardware specification or maker’s process rather than cutting directly from this result.
