Don’t confuse bar with barg

  • bar (absolute) — Pressure measured from a perfect vacuum.
  • barg (gauge) — Pressure above local atmospheric, what most gauges read.

Your tire at “2.2 bar” is 2.2 barg, or 3.2 bar absolute. When converting to psi, the same distinction applies: 2.2 barg = 32 psig, not 32 psia.

Meteorologists rarely talk in bar — they use millibars (1 mbar = 0.001 bar = 100 Pa) or the identical hectopascal. Sea-level standard is 1013.25 mbar / hPa, which is 14.696 psi.

Almost. 1 bar = 100 000 Pa; 1 atm = 101 325 Pa. The difference is 1.3%. For rough work they are interchangeable; for calibration or scientific use they are not.

Because the units are different. A tire at 2.3 bar is at 33.4 psi. The actual pressure is the same; only the gauge units differ. The ratio is always 14.5 psi per bar.
