Balance Sheet Maker
Current assets
Enter current asset amounts.
A balance sheet must balance: Total Assets equals Total Liabilities plus Total Equity. This maker adds your cash, receivables, inventory, equipment less accumulated depreciation, payables, loans, owner capital and retained earnings, then shows totals and whether the sheet balances, with a plain text copy for records.
How to build the balance sheet
-
1
Enter current assets
Add cash, accounts receivable and inventory. These sum to Current Assets.
-
2
Add fixed assets and liabilities
Enter equipment and accumulated depreciation for Fixed Assets (net), then accounts payable, short term loan and long term loan for Total Liabilities.
-
3
Add equity and the statement date
Enter owner capital and retained earnings for Total Equity, and an optional as of date for the header.
-
4
Review the sheet and the status
Check Total Assets, Liabilities plus Equity and the balanced or unbalanced by amount alert, then copy the plain text balance sheet.
The accounting equation
A balance sheet reports what is owned, what is owed and what belongs to owners at one point in time. The fundamental equation is always:
Total Assets = Total Liabilities + Total Equity
This maker enforces that check explicitly. It computes Total Assets as Current Assets plus Fixed Assets (net), where Current Assets is cash plus accounts receivable plus inventory, and Fixed Assets (net) is equipment less accumulated depreciation. It computes Total Liabilities as current liabilities (accounts payable plus short term loan) plus long term loan, and Total Equity as owner capital plus retained earnings. The difference is Total Assets minus (Total Liabilities plus Total Equity).
An absolute difference of 0.005 or less is treated as balanced. Larger differences trigger an alert. Displayed amounts are rounded for the locale currency, so a small difference can display as zero even when the status is unbalanced.
Worked example from the default figures
The default figures balance exactly. The example below uses US dollars; the tool displays the same numeric inputs in the currency configured for each locale without converting them.
| Item | Amount |
|---|---|
| Cash | $12,500.00 |
| Accounts receivable | $4,800.00 |
| Inventory | $9,200.00 |
| Current assets | $26,500.00 |
| Equipment | $22,000.00 |
| Accumulated depreciation | $6,000.00 |
| Fixed assets (net) | $16,000.00 |
| Total assets | $42,500.00 |
| Accounts payable | $5,300.00 |
| Short term loan | $4,000.00 |
| Current liabilities | $9,300.00 |
| Long term loan | $15,000.00 |
| Total liabilities | $24,300.00 |
| Owner capital | $18,000.00 |
| Retained earnings | $200.00 |
| Total equity | $18,200.00 |
| Liabilities plus Equity | $42,500.00 |
| Difference | $0.00 balanced |
Try changing retained earnings from $200.00 to $300.00. Total Equity becomes $18,300.00 and Liabilities plus Equity becomes $42,600.00, while Total Assets stays $42,500.00, so the tool shows Unbalanced by $100.00. Setting all ten amounts to zero gives $0.00 on both sides and shows Balanced.
Using the four step flow
Step 1 asks for current assets, step 2 for fixed assets and liabilities, step 3 for equity and the as of date, and step 4 shows the complete balance sheet table, the balanced or unbalanced status and the plain text copy. Amounts use the currency and number formatting configured for the locale. This changes the display only; no currency conversion takes place. Enter all figures in the same currency.
Practical limits
This is a worksheet for organising entered figures, not accounting, tax, legal, audit or financial advice. It does not import bank transactions, validate GAAP or IFRS categories, calculate profit or loss, or suggest journal entries. Verify that cash, receivables, inventory, equipment, depreciation, payables, loans, owner capital and retained earnings belong in the accounts you intend, check the figures against source records, and ask a qualified professional about the correct treatment for your situation.
Frequently Asked Questions
It adds cash plus receivables plus inventory for current assets, subtracts accumulated depreciation from equipment for fixed assets net and sums them for Total Assets. It adds payables plus short term loan for current liabilities then adds long term loan for Total Liabilities, adds owner capital plus retained earnings for Total Equity, then computes the difference as Total Assets minus (Total Liabilities plus Total Equity). An absolute difference of 0.005 or less shows the green Balanced confirmation, otherwise it shows Unbalanced by and the absolute difference rounded for the displayed currency.
In the default view the amounts are sent to the server to calculate totals. In the four step funnel the amounts are added to the page URL as query parameters such as cash, receivables, inventory, equipment, accumDepreciation, payables, shortLoan, longLoan, ownerCapital, retainedEarnings and asOfDate, and each step navigation sends those values to the server for the same calculation. They appear in the address bar and can remain in browser history or request logs. Anyone receiving a copied link can see those values. They are not written to a database as a saved balance sheet and the tool does not import or export real bank data.
No. This is a simple arithmetic worksheet that checks whether entered totals balance. It is not accounting, tax, legal, audit, or financial advice and it does not choose categories, value inventory, calculate depreciation, or prepare a filing. Check the figures, accounting method, categories and local requirements with a qualified accountant before using the sheet for business or legal purposes.
Yes for a summary view. Combine detailed accounts outside the tool to fit the ten inputs, for example add all cash accounts into Cash and all short term debt into Short term loan, then verify that the consolidated total still balances. Keep your detailed ledger as the source of truth. The inputs only support non-negative amounts, so this worksheet cannot represent accumulated losses or other negative balances.
Use the Copy plain text button under the tables. It copies a line based text version with every input and computed total, using your market currency formatting, so you can paste it into notes, email or a document.
