Angular Velocity Calculator
Angular velocity tells you how fast something spins — how many radians it sweeps per second as it moves along a circular path. Enter the linear (tangential) velocity in metres per second and the radius of the path in metres, and this calculator returns the angular velocity in radians per second (rad/s), the rotational frequency in hertz (Hz) and the speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Use it for wheels, turntables, gears, fans, satellites or a ball on a string. The result updates instantly as you type, so you can compare scenarios without re-running anything.
How to use the calculator
-
1
Enter the linear velocity
Type the tangential speed of the point in metres per second (m/s).
-
2
Enter the radius
Type the radius of the circular path in metres (m). It must be greater than zero.
-
3
Read the result
Angular velocity (rad/s), frequency (Hz) and RPM appear instantly.
The formula
Angular velocity (the Greek letter omega, ω) relates the linear speed of a point to the radius of the circle it travels on:
ω = v / r
From the angular velocity you can derive two everyday quantities — the rotational frequency f and the speed in revolutions per minute (RPM):
f = ω / (2π)
RPM = ω · 60 / (2π)
Where:
ω= angular velocity, in radians per second (rad/s).v= linear (tangential) velocity, in metres per second (m/s).r= radius of the circular path, in metres (m).f= rotational frequency, in hertz (Hz), i.e. revolutions per second.2π≈ 6.2832 radians, the number of radians in one full turn.
One full revolution equals 2π radians, which is why frequency and RPM both divide ω by 2π.
Worked example
A wheel has a radius of 0.3 m and the rim moves at a linear speed of 6 m/s. The angular velocity is:
ω = v / r = 6 / 0.3 = 20 rad/s
Convert to frequency and RPM:
f = 20 / (2π) ≈ 3.18 Hz
RPM = 20 · 60 / (2π) ≈ 190.99 RPM
So the wheel turns almost 191 times every minute. If the radius shrank to 0.15 m at the same rim speed, ω would double to 40 rad/s — a smaller circle sweeps the same arc length in less angle, so it spins faster.
Quick reference
| Velocity (m/s) | Radius (m) | Angular velocity (rad/s) | Frequency (Hz) | RPM |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | 0.3 | 20.0000 | 3.1831 | 190.99 |
| 10 | 2 | 5.0000 | 0.7958 | 47.75 |
| 1 | 1 | 1.0000 | 0.1592 | 9.55 |
| 25 | 0.5 | 50.0000 | 7.9577 | 477.46 |
| 3 | 0.1 | 30.0000 | 4.7746 | 286.48 |
Common pitfalls
- Radius cannot be zero. ω = v / r is undefined when r = 0, so the calculator returns 0 until you enter a radius greater than zero.
- Radians, not degrees. Angular velocity here is in radians per second. To convert to degrees per second, multiply by 180/π ≈ 57.2958.
- Keep SI units. Velocity in m/s and radius in m give ω directly in rad/s. Convert km/h, RPM or centimetres first.
- ω vs. v. Linear velocity (v) is how fast the point moves along its arc; angular velocity (ω) is how fast the angle changes. They are linked by the radius: v = ω · r.
Frequently Asked Questions
Angular velocity is the rate at which an object rotates, measured as the angle swept per unit time. In SI units it is radians per second (rad/s) and is given by ω = v / r, where v is the linear velocity and r is the radius of the path.
Multiply the angular velocity in rad/s by 60 and divide by 2π: RPM = ω · 60 / (2π). For example, 20 rad/s equals 20 · 60 / 6.2832 ≈ 190.99 RPM.
Frequency (f) counts full revolutions per second and is measured in hertz (Hz), while angular velocity (ω) measures radians per second. They are related by ω = 2πf, so f = ω / (2π).
